Somali Pirates have already hijacked 2 ships in 2010!somali pirates

January 2nd, 2010 - The UK flagged Vehicle Carrier "Asian Glory", was hijacked by Somali Pirates, with a crew of 25 on board. Seized in the Indian Ocean steaming West towards the Gulf of Aden.

January 1st, 2010 - The Singapore flagged Chemical Tanker "MV Pramoni" was hijacked by Somali Pirates, with a crew of 24 on board. Seized in the MSPA in the Gulf of Aden steaming East towards the Red Sea.

This is in full accord with GEO's previosu warning posted on the 30th of December. GEO then warned about increased hijackings over the New Year, as the majority of Naval vessels are in port for celebrations.

Attacks have increased in 2009 over 2008, regardless of the increased anti piracy mission by Naval warships in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.img_4306

Somali Pirates have attacked 215 vessels this year and Hijacked 48 of those vessels. The attacks have taken place both inside the Gulf of Aden and recently increasingly in the Indian Ocean along the east coast of Africa and north of the Seychelles. Attacks have occurred as far as 800 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia.

The confined seas of the Gulf of Aden accounted for 17 Hijacks and the wast Indian Ocean for 31 Hijacks.

GEO successfully protected 85 vessels transiting the Gulf of Aden in 2009!

Somali Pirates have hijacked 6 ships in the month of December 2009.19_ae_pirates_ship_4

December 6th, 2009 - The Pakistani Fishing vessel "Shabaig", was hijacked by Somali Pirates, with a crew of 29 on board. Seized in the Indian Ocean about 320 miles east of Socotra.

December 16th, 2009 - The Indian Dhow "Neseya" was hijacked by Somali Pirates, with a crew of 13 on board. Seized off the coast of Kismayo in southern Somalia.

December 18th, 2009 - The Yemeni Cargo vessel "Al Mahmoud", was hijacked by Somali Pirates, with a crew of 16 on board. Seized in the Gulf of Aden.

December 25th, 2009 - The Yemeni vessel "MV Socotra 1" was hijacked by Somali Pirates. Seized in the Gulf of Aden.

December 28th, 2009 - The UK Flagged Chemical Tanker "ST James Park", was hijacked by Somali Pirates, with a crew of 26 on board. Seized in the Gulf of Aden.

December 28th, 2009 - The Panama Flagged Bulk Cargo vessel "Navios Apollon", was hijacked by Somali Pirates, with a crew of 19 on board. Seized in the Indian Ocean north of the Seychelles, about 800 miles from Somalia.

GEO advises all shipping companies to be on high alert for piracy acts during the month of January. Last year the attacks picked up just around the beginning of the new year.

GEO further advises all ships transiting through the Gulf of Aden and along the eastern coast of Africa to embark security teams. We further wish to remind that the US Naval Command have recommended Armed Security Teams as "Best Practises" to counter the threat posed by Somali Pirates.
