PIRACY: Somalia - Thursday, March 5, 2009
The Cruise Ship Balmoral came under fire four times during an attempted attack by armed Somali Pirates in two boats.

Two small craft were spotted Tuesday morning as they closed quickly on the 43,000-ton and 715-ft long Cruise Ship, carrying more than 1,300 passengers on a round-the-world cruise came had to take evasive actions including severe zigzag course to shake off the pirates

The pirates armed with AK's and RPG rocket launchers circled the ship and came within 400 yards of the cruise ship. Witnesses stated that people were frightened and in tears and could hear shooting.

The Balmoral's crew made emergency calls, sent up distress flares and evacuated the passengers to designated safe havens on the Balmoral.

The attack was only averted by the intervention of a U.S. Navy ship which escorted the cruise vessel through the perilous Gulf of Aden.

The Blue Star an Egyptian cargo ship captured in the Gulf of Aden on the 1st of January 2009 was released Wednesday by Somali pirates.

The ship and its 28 man crew have been held for ransom off the coast of Somalia by pirates for more than two months.

The Blue Star was transiting the Gulf of Aden from the Red Sea carrying a cargo og 6,000 tons of fertilizer when 15 armed pirates seized it after entering the Gulf of Aden.

Pirate attacks have continued off the East coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden regardless of the increased presence of warships deployed to protect commercial shipping.

Global Executive Outreach again sets the standards in Maritime Security in the Gulf of Aden. With our extensive experience from completing more than 85 successful GoA transits in 2009 and our unique position of being able to provide both Armed and Unarmed transits from countries such as: Djibouti, Egypt, Oman, Sudan, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. GEO have again raised the bar for security services in the GOA.

img_4746With our strategially placed  local shipping agents, GEO have established a working relationship wherein merchant marine ships protected by GEO's Maritime Security Advisory Teams, are provided with full and direct operational support from the government agencies during passage of the Gulf of Aden.

When GEO's highly experienced pro-active security measures are combined with the decisive force provided by an armed backup, then the risk faced by merchant marine ships are almost nil.

GEO's Maritime Security Advisory Teams work from a Standard Operational Procedure consisting of 4 pro-active tactics:

  • DETECT
  • DETER
  • DELAY
  • DENY

We have already proven the effectiveness of this 4 step pro-active concept during more than 85 successful transits completed in 2009. With the extra level of security provided by our new association with strategically placed local shipping agents, then GEO can now offer an unmatched level of protection to Merchant Marine ships transiting the Gulf of Aden.

Whereas the extra level of protection from an armed security advisory team ensures a high level of decisive protection. Then GEO nevertheless share the concerns by both merchant marine companies and insurance companies towards armed guards, and therefore we still focus our primary defense on the first 3 Levels of pro-active non-lethal tactics of defense.
